Bengals QB Palmer might play Thursday (AP)

Carson Palmer threw some passes to Cincinnati Bengals teammates during practice, an indication he could play in the final preseason game. Palmer threw to receivers during the first 30 minutes of practice Monday, the first time he's done that in nearly three weeks. The quarterback dropped back after taking snaps and moved around without problem on his sprained left ankle.

Stafford only healthy QB for Lions (AP)

For one day, there was no question that Matt Stafford was the Detroit Lions' first-string quarterback. Giant mystery: Umenyiora misses practice (AP)

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora missed a practice and coach Tom Coughlin doesn't know why. Umenyiora attended team meetings on Monday morning at the Giants headquarters. However, he left unexpectedly, didn't talk to Coughlin before leaving and didn't return for practice. General manager Jerry Reese sent a text message to Umenyiora to ask him if he was all right.

Big Ben’s big arm allays Steelers’ fears (AP)

Throwing one perfectly timed pass after another during a long scoring drive, Ben Roethlisberger answered any questions about how ready he is to start the season. He fired a 16-yard strike to Limas Sweed, followed by another perfect throw to Hines Ward. Then he waited for Heath Miller to get open and feathered an 18-yard completion to the tight end.

Steelers RG Stapleton out for season (AP)

Pittsburgh Steelers right guard Darnell Stapleton has been placed on the injured reserve list with a knee injury and will miss the season. Stapleton injured his left knee during the first week of training camp and had arthroscopic surgery to remove loose cartilage. An undrafted player who started in the Super Bowl, he was expected to be ready by the start of the season.

Chiefs’ Haley fires coordinator Gailey (AP)

Rookie coach Todd Haley fired Chan Gailey as Kansas City's offensive coordinator on Monday and assumed the role himself, 13 days ahead of the season opener at Baltimore. Haley refused to comment on the status of quarterback Matt Cassel, who sustained an apparent knee injury on Saturday night and could be out for a time, raising even more concerns for the offense.

Steelers DE Keisel signs 5-year contract (AP)

Defensive end Brett Keisel has signed a five-year contract, becoming the eighth player to reach a new deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers since they won the Super Bowl in February. Bengals put TE Utecht on injured reserve (AP)

The Bengals have placed tight end Ben Utecht on the injured reserve list, ending his season. Utecht suffered a severe concussion during practice on Aug. 5, when he was taken from the field in an ambulance. The reserve hasn't been able to practice, prompting the move on Monday. The Bengals also waived tight end Matt Sherry with a shoulder injury.

Career of Ravens CB Rolle in jeopardy (AP)

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle will spend at least the opening six weeks of the season on the physically unable to perform list with a neck injury that could mean the end of his career. The 33-year-old Rolle missed six games in 2008 because of the injury. He underwent surgery last year and intends to have another operation.

Giants LB Boley taken off PUP list (AP)

New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley is ready to get back on a football field. Boley, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract, was taken off the physically unable to perform list and was to practice on Monday for the first time since having surgery in June to repair a torn labrum. The former Atlanta Falcon hurt his hip during the offseason program.
