Jets fine Ryan $50K for obscene gesture (AP)

Jets coach Rex Ryan has been fined $50,000 by the team for making an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event last weekend. Eagles sign P Brooks to 2-year deal (AP)

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed punter Durant Brooks to a two-year contract, giving incumbent Sav Rocca competition. Brooks, a sixth-round pick by Washington in 2008, played six games with the Redskins. He had a gross average of 39.6 yards on 26 punts. Brooks spent time on Green Bay's practice squad in '08 and was released by the Packers last preseason.

McCardell to coach Redskins receivers (AP)

Longtime NFL wideout Keenan McCardell will be the receivers coach for the Washington Redskins. McCardell was hired Tuesday as the replacement for Stan Hixon, who was not retained by new coach Mike Shanahan. Hixon was hired Monday as Buffalo Bills receivers coach. McCardell caught 883 passes, 13th on the career list, over 17 seasons.

Bengals LB Maualuga pleads guilty to DUI (AP)

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga (mow-uh-LOO'-guh) has pleaded guilty to drunken driving. He received a suspended jail sentence and apologized to the team and community. Maualuga brought a quick ending to his case Tuesday in a northern Kentucky court. He was arrested four days ago after police said he hit a parking meter and two parked cars early Friday morning.

Jets QB Sanchez to have knee surgery (AP)

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has decided to have surgery on his left knee and is expected to be ready for training camp. The Jets said Tuesday the operation will happen in the next few weeks. The surgery will repair the ligament that holds the kneecap in place. Sanchez originally injured his left knee in college at Southern California.

Coach Jim Caldwell says the Colts are preparing to play without defensive end Dwight Freeney in the Super Bowl, though he remains hopeful the All-Pro defensive end will suit up for the game. Freeney's sprained right ankle kept him out of practice most of last week. He was already in Florida when the team held its final workout of the season in Indy on Sunday.

Wife of Ex-Cowboys TE Novacek found dead (AP)

The wife of former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jay Novacek has been found dead in a home. Burleson spokeswoman Sally Ellertson says police in the Fort Worth suburb responded to a call of a possible suicide early Monday. The Tarrant County medical examiner identified the woman as 45-year-old LeAnne Novacek, 45, whose home address was listed in the nearby town of Joshua.
