NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith paints a bleak picture of the league's labor situation. Smith says the likelihood of a lockout after the upcoming season is "14" on a scale of 1 to 10. He notes that the league recently received a $5 billion extension on its network television deals even if no games are played in 2011.

Seahawks’ Carroll adds new assistants (AP)

New Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has retained two assistants and added 18 new ones to his first staff. The team confirmed Thursday that defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and defensive line coach Dan Quinn will return next season. Carroll had said Jeremy Bates is joining him from Southern Cal as his offensive coordinator.

Bills get Gators’ Edwards to run defense (AP)

George Edwards has abruptly left the Florida Gators to become the Buffalo Bills new defensive coordinator. Edwards' hiring was announced by the Bills on Thursday, only 27 days after he had been hired to the same job under Gators coach Urban Meyer. University of Florida officials were not immediately available for comment regarding Edwards' departure.

Giants Stadium demolition gets started (AP)

The demolition of Giants Stadium got started Thursday when a giant metal claw attached to a crane started taking bites out of the cement helix at one of the four gates around the 34-year-old facility. Clouds of dust drifted in the air as concrete and rebar poked through areas where the concrete was ripped away.

Eagles hire Savage as draft consultant (AP)

The Eagles have hired former Browns general manager Phil Savage as a player personnel consultant for the April draft. Savage will work with new GM Howie Roseman and director of player personnel Ryan Grigson. He'll concentrate on evaluating draft prospects in the Southeast. Savage spent four seasons as Cleveland's senior vice president and GM from 2005-08.

Freeney hopes to test ankle Friday (AP)

Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney is hoping to test his sore right ankle for the first time during Friday's Super Bowl practice. Freeney tore a ligament in the ankle late in the 30-17 victory by Indianapolis over the Jets in the AFC title game. He is questionable for Sunday's NFL title game against the New Orleans Saints.

Colts’ Freeney, Powers sit out practice (AP)

Dwight Freeney and Jerraud Powers both have sat out the Colts' Super Bowl practice in South Florida. All-Pro defensive end Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against New Orleans. Rookie cornerback Powers has a left foot injury. Neither was expected to practice Wednesday.
